UK Treasury Minister Tulip Siddiq has resigned following pressure over corruption allegations linked to her family in Bangladesh. Siddiq, the Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate, cited her decision as necessary to avoid distractions, maintaining her innocence.
The investigation centers on her connections to her aunt, Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister, and allegations of embezzlement tied to infrastructure projects. A separate probe accuses Siddiq of influencing property allocations in Dhaka.
An inquiry by Sir Laurie Magnus found no evidence of wrongdoing but criticized Siddiq for not recognizing reputational risks associated with her family ties.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer accepted her resignation, thanking her for her service. Emma Reynolds has been appointed as Siddiq’s successor.
