A year ago, Faith Odhiambo was known primarily as the vice president of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK). Today, she stands out as the 51st president of the LSK, celebrated for her bold leadership and relentless defense of justice.
Rising from a competitive election campaign, Odhiambo took office determined to uphold the rule of law. She became a prominent figure during the Gen Z protests, organizing legal teams to secure the release of arrested demonstrators, searching for the disappeared, and braving threats and police violence. Her efforts kept the LSK council united during a challenging year.
“It has not been an easy year, but who are the hard times made for?” she remarked, highlighting her conviction-led approach to leadership. Odhiambo listens to diverse voices within the council, respects dissent, and finds common ground to navigate challenges.
Her leadership has garnered recognition. On December 11, she was named Jurist of the Year by the Kenyan chapter of the International Commission of Jurists, becoming the 31st recipient of the prestigious award. Two days later, she received the CB Madan Award at Strathmore University, honoring her dedication to human rights, constitutional values, and accountability.
Odhiambo believes that standing up for the rule of law benefits both the public and the legal profession. She is committed to ensuring duty bearers respect the constitution and uphold justice, fostering an environment where the legal profession can thrive. Her achievements underscore her lasting impact on Kenya’s legal and human rights landscape.
