For the first time in Kenya’s history, a youth-led uprising has redefined civic engagement and political activism, earning Generation Z the title of Persons of the Year 2024.
This leaderless protest, sparked by grievances over oppressive taxation, privacy violations, economic hardships, and corruption, transcended tribal, regional, and gender divisions. Organised through platforms like TikTok and X, it marked a new era of activism, bypassing traditional civil society organisations and political affiliations.
Despite a heavy-handed police crackdown that left 61 dead and dozens missing, the protests forced significant reforms, including a cabinet dissolution and President Ruto’s reconsideration of the Finance Bill.
Gen Z’s peaceful approach—armed with smartphones and a commitment to democracy—demonstrated their ingenuity and resilience. Professionals offered free legal and medical support, fostering solidarity and mutual aid.
Their movement not only held leaders accountable but also highlighted the possibility of governance free from tribal divisions. Gen Z’s courage and determination signal a generational shift in Kenya’s political landscape, offering hope for a future rooted in justice and unity.
The Star celebrates their transformative impact, naming them Persons of the Year 2024.
