China’s Ambassador to Kenya, Zhou Pingjian, is set to conclude his four-year tenure and return to Beijing this month. Zhou, who succeeded Wu Peng in 2020, is commended for advancing Kenya-China relations, marking significant achievements during his tenure.
Under his leadership, Kenya enhanced its role in the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Zhou facilitated high-level talks between President William Ruto and Chinese President Xi Jinping, resulting in important agreements. He also championed people-to-people exchanges, participating in cultural events like the Turkana Tourism Festival and supporting educational initiatives, including scholarships for Kenyan students.
In trade, Zhou oversaw the export of new products, such as dry sea cucumbers, to China and promoted local employment in Chinese-led infrastructure projects like the Nairobi Expressway and Western Bypass. However, challenges like trade imbalances and slow uptake of Kenyan exports to China remain.
UDA Party praised Zhou as a highly popular envoy whose contributions will have a lasting impact.
