A fire at Nyayo Market in Nairobi’s Ngara area on Sunday evening left several traders counting losses after structures containing second-hand clothes and shoes were destroyed.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei confirmed that up to 50 structures were razed, but no injuries were reported. Police are investigating the cause of the fire, which reportedly began in one structure and quickly spread.
Emergency responders, including a Nairobi County fire engine, worked with locals to battle the flames. Though isolated looting incidents occurred, police secured the scene to protect valuables.
Many traders expressed devastation, having lost their entire stock, while others began reconstructing their stalls. County officials were expected to visit the site on Monday to support investigations and provide assistance.
Authorities dismissed rumors that the fire was deliberately started to clear the area for a government project, calling the claims baseless.
The incident highlights the frequent occurrence of fires in informal markets, often worsened by limited access roads that hinder emergency responses. County officials are advocating for road expansions and the construction of fire-resistant permanent structures to prevent similar tragedies.
