The government has pledged to ensure the safety of journalists as they perform their duties, emphasizing its commitment to media freedom. Speaking at the Kenya Editors Guild Annual Convention 2024 in Nakuru, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki affirmed that protecting journalists is crucial and underscored the constitutional guarantee of press freedom. Addressing recent concerns, Kindiki condemned the police shooting of Kameme TV journalist Catherine Wanjeri during anti-government protests in Nakuru and vowed to seek justice through the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). He highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between the government and the media, calling for open dialogue and adherence to the rule of law. Kindiki also assured that the government would respect court rulings, including the recent High Court decision limiting the Communication Authority of Kenya’s power over media standards, reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to constitutional governance.
