The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has urged the establishment of a robust global treaty on plastics to implement binding rules covering the entire lifecycle of plastics. Eirik Lindebjerg, WWF’s global plastics policy lead, emphasized the importance of decisive action, urging negotiators at the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) in Busan, Korea, to adopt science-backed measures to tackle plastic pollution effectively.
INC-5, held from November 25 to December 1, aims to finalize an international agreement addressing plastic pollution. Previous sessions have taken place in Punta del Este, Paris, Nairobi, and Ottawa. The treaty seeks to ban and phase out harmful plastic products, ensuring plastics are safe for reuse and recycling.
UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen called the meeting a historic opportunity to combat the global plastic crisis, protect the environment, and safeguard human health. Over 3,800 participants, including representatives from 170 countries, are attending the conference, the highest in its series.
