The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has conducted raids at the homes of two senior officials from the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).
These officials are being investigated as part of ongoing EACC inquiries into the construction of multimillion-shilling roads managed by KeRRA. The commission is looking into allegations of unexplained wealth accumulation, conflict of interest, kickbacks from contractors, and embezzlement of public funds through procurement fraud in road construction and maintenance.
On Thursday, EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed that detectives had searched the home of one official in the Coast region, following a similar operation at another official’s residence in the Mt Kenya region just a week prior.
“The search operations have produced crucial evidence that will support investigations aimed at forfeiting unexplained wealth and recommending prosecutions,” Ngumbi stated.
One of the officials is reported to have illegally received Sh311,125,109.90 from KeRRA between the fiscal years 2016/17 and 2022/23. The other official faces accusations of conflict of interest, abuse of office, and embezzling Sh108,501,993 while conducting business with KeRRA through proxy companies.
In a letter dated July 10, 2024, the EACC recommended to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) that the official accused of embezzling Sh108,501,993 be charged.
