The hearing for Yassin Moyo’s murder begins today, nearly four years after he was fatally shot in Mathare while his family observed police enforcing the COVID-19 curfew.
A postmortem report presented in court indicated that he died from excessive bleeding caused by a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. On that tragic day, the 13-year-old was watching police patrol with his mother and siblings.
Duncan Ndiema was charged with the murder before Justice Luka Kimaru on June 23, 2020. Ndiema, who was in uniform at the time of the incident, was armed with an Israeli pistol (serial number 44338354) loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition. He pleaded not guilty and was released on Sh1 million cash bail, with the condition that he does not interfere with witnesses.
At the time of his death, Yassin was a Standard Eight student at Ndururuno Primary School, and like many other pupils, he was at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was buried at the Kariokor Muslim Cemetery in Nairobi on Tuesday.
