Members of Parliament are set to return to their regular sessions today following a month-long break. The lawmakers had voted on August 7 to adjust their parliamentary calendar, which led to a recess starting on August 16.
The MPs will begin the Third Part of the Third Session today before taking their extended December holiday.
During today’s proceedings, several committee reports will be presented for consideration. These include a report from the National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity Committee on an audit of employment diversity in public institutions, and another from the Committee on Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives concerning allegations of unfair trade practices by foreign investors in Kenya.
Other items on the agenda include Public Petition No. 4 of 2022, which addresses expenditures by the National Government that may have breached Article 223 of the Constitution, and the supplementary estimates I for FY 2024/2025 related to consolidated fund services.
The Equalisation Fund (Administration) Bill from the Senate is also scheduled for its second reading.
On Wednesday, MPs will review the report from the joint committee of the National Assembly’s Administration and Internal Security and the Senate’s Internal Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations on the nomination of Douglas Kanja as the new Inspector General of Police. This will be the final step in the appointment process, as the Senate has already approved his nomination.
Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, who has been serving in an interim role, will be succeeded by Kanja if the appointment is confirmed. Kanja has been nominated to replace Japhet Koome, who resigned on July 12, and who had been in the position since 2022.
