Armed men have attacked a military training camp in Bamako, Mali’s capital, according to state television ORTM. The network described the attackers as “terrorists.”
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning, with gunfire reported in the city. The attackers targeted a gendarmerie school near the airport, but ORTM stated that the situation is now “under control.”
Mali has been grappling with an Islamist insurgency for over a decade, and while the military took power in a 2021 coup, the violence has persisted with no clear resolution in sight.
On Tuesday, social media videos showed smoke rising from the city, and witnesses reported hearing gunshots starting around 05:30 local time (05:30 GMT). People heading to the mosque for morning prayers had to turn back due to the ongoing violence.
ORTM has reported that “combing operations” are underway at the attack site.
