In his latest book, Whispers from My Childhood, popular comedian Timothy Kimani, aka Njugush, shares anecdotes from his youth, highlighting the strict discipline enforced by his mother. He recalls instances of being punished for mischief, including a peculiar incident where he inadvertently harmed his mother’s newly hatched chicks.
Njugush describes his mother as “strict,” emphasizing her tendency to discipline him harshly whenever he made mistakes. One notable event involved him strangling a brood of chicks while his mother entertained a guest. He recalls, “As was customary, my mother had set rules for our behavior during visits, including giving adults space to converse. Instead, I took my frustration out on the chicks.”
After the incident, Njugush faced severe consequences. “My mother couldn’t wait for the guest to leave; she administered a significant punishment,” he reminisces.
In the book, his mother describes him as a child eager for attention, often resorting to outrageous antics to be noticed. In another story, he recounts leading a small group to a neighbor’s farm to cut down banana trees, showcasing his newfound skills from a local tree feller.
When caught by the neighbor’s grandmother, Njugush faced another round of discipline, highlighting the consequences of his youthful indiscretions.
Through these narratives, Njugush provides a humorous yet poignant look at his formative years, revealing how his childhood experiences shaped his comedic persona.
