Journalists in Nakuru County held a protest on Wednesday to condemn the shooting of their colleague, Catherine Kariuki, during anti-government demonstrations in Nakuru Town.
The protest began at the railway ground and proceeded along Kenyatta Avenue, the main thoroughfare in the bustling city. The journalists paused at the location where Kariuki was shot three times while reporting on the protests the previous day.
Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, a reporter for Kameme Radio and TV, was injured while covering the demonstration. Holding placards and chanting slogans, the journalists denounced violence against the press.
They called for accountability and a comprehensive investigation into the shooting, demanding justice for those responsible.
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) also condemned the incident. MCK CEO David Omwoyo described the shooting as both shameful and alarming.
“The shooting of Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, while she was with other journalists and the police, is utterly disgraceful,” he stated.
The Kenya Editors’ Guild similarly condemned what they characterized as ongoing, targeted attacks on journalists during protests.
