National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula emphasized the vital role of the media in promoting effective parliamentary operations and public accountability during a meeting on Wednesday. He highlighted the Parliamentary Service Commission’s collaboration with various media associations to enhance this partnership.
“The media is a key stakeholder in facilitating the efficient delivery of parliamentary work and informing the public while upholding national values of transparency and accountability,” Wetang’ula stated.
He noted that the Constitution of Kenya 2010, particularly Articles 34, 35, and 118, underscores the importance of media in this context.
The meeting included representatives from the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ), and the Kenya Parliamentary Journalists Association (KPJA). Wetang’ula addressed concerns raised by journalists regarding potential restrictions on their access to Parliament amid protests.
He reiterated the commitment to a collaborative relationship with the media to ensure timely and accurate information dissemination.
Additionally, Wetang’ula announced plans to establish an Ultra-Modern Media Center within Parliament Square to support journalists in their work. He assured stakeholders that the existing media legislation would be reviewed to align with current trends and technological advancements.
