By the 254.ke Newsroom. Updated November 4, 2026.

Kenya has signed a Statement of Intent with Idris Elba’s Akuna Group to cooperate on the creative economy, financing for content creators and access to international markets. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei signed it on behalf of Kenya on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda. None of the published reports gives a monetary value for the arrangement.

What did Kenya actually sign with Idris Elba?

The document is a Statement of Intent, not a contract with stated financial terms. Reports in Kenyans.co.ke, KBC, Nairobi Wire and Mwakilishi describe it as setting out a pathway for cooperation between the Kenyan government and Akuna Group, which Elba chairs. Some headlines call it a “deal” or a “partnership”; the sources reviewed do not say whether it is legally binding.

Sing’Oei announced the signing in a post from the summit. He said it establishes “a pathway for cooperation in the creative economy.”

Key facts at a glance

  • Signed: Tuesday, November 3, 2026, during CHOGM, which runs November 1 to 4 in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.
  • Kenya’s signatory: Dr Korir Sing’Oei, Principal Secretary, State Department for Foreign Affairs.
  • Counterparty: Akuna Group, chaired by Sir Idris Elba.
  • Scope: creative industries, artificial intelligence, digital innovation, skills development, creator financing and access to international markets.
  • Kenyan programme it supports: Talanta Hela, the government’s initiative for young creatives.
  • Value and term: not disclosed in any published report reviewed.

Why is the Commonwealth involved?

The statement sits under the Commonwealth Creative Economy Partnership, which reports say brings together Kenya, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Barbados. CHOGM 2026 is the 28th such meeting, hosted by Antigua and Barbuda under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.” Background on the grouping is on the Commonwealth Secretariat website.

What happens next?

President William Ruto has invited Elba to visit Kenya for the forthcoming Internet Governance Forum, where the partnership programme is expected to be unveiled. No date or venue for that event appears in the reports reviewed, so the timeline for any concrete funding or training remains unclear.

How did the talks start?

Sing’Oei and Elba held a virtual meeting in September 2026 on the challenges facing young African artists and creative entrepreneurs. Elba cited a need for professional networks, access to international markets, creative education, reliable payment systems and new technology.

In October, Akuna Group announced a separate AI filmmaking initiative for African filmmakers with Google and Curious Refuge, an online AI filmmaking school. It includes production funding for selected projects, and filmmakers keep ownership of their work. That programme is separate from the Kenya statement.

What does it mean for Kenyan creatives?

For now, it signals intent. The practical test will be whether the programme unveiled in Kenya names funds, eligibility rules and application dates. The creative sector has been in the news in recent weeks, from the NBO Film Festival 2026 line-up to the row over content creators and artist boycott calls.
