At least 38 individuals detained at Jesus Ministry Church in Roysambu on Sunday were released unconditionally after being questioned at Kasarani Police Station. A group of lawyers had arrived to request their release, and authorities complied.
The arrests followed clashes between police and locals protesting a KSh 20 million donation from President William Ruto to Bishop Edward Mwai. Demonstrators blocked roads and lit bonfires, prompting police to use tear gas. Businesses shut down as the unrest disrupted church services.
Mwai accused unnamed individuals of orchestrating the protests, claiming some protesters disguised themselves as church members. Despite the criticism, he forgave his detractors and urged peace. Meanwhile, police maintained a presence at the church for security.
