Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his willingness to cooperate under Donald Trump’s “strong leadership” to achieve a lasting peace, just days after their tense Oval Office meeting. In a lengthy social media post, Zelensky described the White House encounter as “regrettable” and emphasized the need to “make things right” following Trump’s accusation that he was not prepared for negotiations.
Zelensky outlined initial steps toward ending the war, including a prisoner exchange and an immediate ceasefire on missile strikes, long-range drones, and attacks on civilian infrastructure—provided Russia reciprocates. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness to sign a minerals deal with the U.S., which remained unsigned after the contentious Washington meeting. Expressing gratitude for past American support, Zelensky specifically acknowledged Trump’s role in supplying Javelin missiles during his first administration.
The post followed reports that the U.S. had paused military aid to Ukraine, a move welcomed by Russia as a potential step toward peace. Meanwhile, European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, backed Zelensky’s commitment to diplomacy. NATO’s Secretary General urged the Ukrainian leader to mend relations with Trump.
Trump, who previously criticized Zelensky’s stance on peace negotiations, is expected to address Congress, with reports indicating he may announce a finalized minerals deal between the U.S. and Ukraine.
