Western and Nyanza regions have shown high interest in IEBC leadership roles, according to data from the selection panel. A total of 1,319 candidates applied for commissioner positions, while 37 expressed interest in the chairperson role.
Homa Bay led in applications with 63 for commissioner and five for chairperson, followed by Kisii (62), Bungoma (59), and Kakamega (54). Other top counties included Siaya (43), Kisumu (39), Busia (36), Migori (36), Nyamira (35), and Vihiga (34). In Mt. Kenya, Meru had 43 applicants, while Wajir from North Eastern recorded 37.
Lamu had the lowest interest with only three applications, followed by Turkana and Samburu with seven each. Other counties with low numbers included Tharaka Nithi (8), Nyandarua (8), Nairobi (8), and Laikipia (9).
Of the applicants, 80.8% were male (1,078), while 17.8% were female (237). The selection panel also recorded duplicate and unreferenced applications, with 14 classified as stray submissions.
The IEBC reconstitution follows the exit of former commissioners, including the late Wafula Chebukati. The vacancies have delayed electoral activities, including by-elections and preparations for the 2027 polls.
Selection Panel Chairperson Nelson Makanda assured the public of a fair and transparent process, emphasizing integrity, impartiality, and accountability. Shortlisted candidates will proceed to interviews before the final selection.
