The past few weeks in American politics have been eventful since Kamala Harris replaced Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket.
On Tuesday, Harris announced her vice-presidential pick: Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota and a former congressman, teacher, and army veteran. Other potential candidates included Josh Shapiro, governor of Pennsylvania; Andy Beshear, governor of Kentucky; and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly.
The BBC reached out to Democratic voters to gauge their reactions to the selection:
Kathryn Vaughn, 44, Tennessee
Vaughn, who grew up in a Republican family but now votes Democrat, is enthusiastic about Walz. “He’s a teacher like me, a rural Democrat, and an IVF parent, just like I am. His background and energy will be a great addition to the campaign. I’m excited to see him debate Trump’s running mate, JD Vance. Rural America has struggled under Trump, and Walz gives hope for a stronger advocate for rural issues.”
Annie Tye, 43, Illinois
Initially favoring Mark Kelly, Tye has warmed to Walz after researching him. “I’m excited about Walz. He brings qualities that Shapiro and Kelly don’t. He’s engaging, has a hunting background, and has worked hard for kids and fair wages. His background might appeal to those hesitant about a liberal anti-gun stance. Kamala and Walz could really shake up the Republican side.”
Isaac Chandler, 30, Oklahoma
Chandler views Walz as an excellent choice for rallying Democratic support. “Walz’s progressive policies, advocacy for unions, and efforts to provide free school lunches in Minnesota are impressive. His commitment to helping struggling people resonates with me. He feels like a comforting presence and is more inspiring compared to Trump’s ticket.”
Mary Mendenhall, 34, New York
Mendenhall, who was previously skeptical, now feels optimistic about the Harris-Walz ticket. “I was surprised Walz was chosen over Shapiro, but I think he’s a great pick. He’s been a good governor and supports progressive values. The choice of Walz gives me hope for the election, especially in comparison to Vance. The outlook has significantly improved in just a few weeks.”
Overall, the selection of Tim Walz as vice-president has generated positive reactions among Democratic voters, who see him as a strong, relatable, and effective partner for Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.
