The United States has called on Rwanda to end its support for the M23 rebel group and withdraw its troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In a statement, US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized the need for Rwanda to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC.
Washington also urged both Rwanda and the DRC to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations, warning that ongoing conflict hampers economic development and discourages US investment in the region.
Rwanda, however, maintains that its involvement is a defensive measure against security threats along its border, citing attacks on Rubavu border town in January that resulted in casualties. President Paul Kagame insists that Rwanda cannot be held responsible for the crisis, arguing that it was initiated by the DRC.
