The United States has urged Rwanda to cease its backing of the M23 rebel group and withdraw its military forces from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In a statement, U.S. Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized Rwanda’s obligation to respect DRC’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The U.S. also called on both Rwanda and the DRC to hold those responsible for human rights violations accountable, warning that ongoing conflict hampers economic development and deters American investment in the region.
Rwanda, however, maintains that its actions are defensive, citing security threats from the DRC-backed FDLR militia. It referenced a January 26 attack on the Rubavu border town, which resulted in multiple casualties. Rwandan officials insist that the DRC is responsible for the crisis, arguing that Rwanda is unfairly blamed for the conflict.
