One in twelve university students urgently needs rehabilitation due to severe addiction, according to a Nacada report on substance abuse.
The study, covering 17 universities, found 10,732 affected students in public institutions (8.3%) and 4,946 in private universities (9.5%). Male and female cases were nearly equal, with 8,496 men and 7,090 women struggling with addiction.
Despite 1.3 million Kenyans needing rehabilitation, only 300 centres exist. The report highlights alcohol as the most accessible substance, followed by cigarettes, shisha, and narcotics like cannabis, cocaine, and heroin. Authorities now call for stronger counselling programs and enhanced anti-drug measures.
