The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) expressed deep concern over the forced return of four refugees from Kenya to Turkey. The repatriation, requested by the Turkish government, was facilitated by Kenya due to its strong ties with Turkey. The four individuals are believed to be associated with the Gulen movement, which is considered a terrorist group by Turkish authorities.
The UNHCR emphasized Kenya’s obligation to uphold the principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits returning refugees to places where they might face danger. The Kenyan government stated it received assurances from Turkey that the refugees would be treated with dignity.
The incident follows reports of multiple kidnappings in Nairobi, including that of a British national, Necdet Seyitoğlu, who was abducted along with several Turkish citizens. Seyitoğlu was released after showing his British passport. He reported that six other Turkish nationals were taken in similar incidents.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is supporting Seyitoğlu, while Kenyan authorities have launched investigations into the kidnappings. Kenyan police stated that witnesses saw two vehicles intercept a car, from which armed individuals abducted two occupants. Amnesty International and local law firms have condemned these actions, urging protection of refugees’ rights.
Kenya’s foreign ministry reiterated its commitment to refugee rights and privacy. The UNHCR and other organizations continue to monitor the situation closely, awaiting further details.
