A driver was killed instantly when his vehicle collided with a trailer near the Kwamajini area along the Matuu-Thika road and erupted in flames. The crash occurred near Sofia Market on Friday morning.
According to police, the driver’s four-wheel drive vehicle is believed to have struck the rear of a lorry. The driver attempted to escape the vehicle but was trapped after the impact and was unable to flee. He died from burns shortly after the crash.
Firefighters from Matuu responded promptly and extinguished the flames. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the incident.
The body was taken to Mbaku Funeral Home for autopsy, while the wrecked vehicles were towed to Matuu Police Station for further investigation. Police suspect that the fire was caused by the force of the collision. The victim had been traveling from Garissa to Nairobi.
In a separate incident, a driver was killed when a lorry overturned into a ditch along the Keroka-Sotik road on Wednesday evening. The lorry, heading towards Kericho, veered off the road and collided with a salon car traveling in the opposite direction before rolling into a ditch.
Police reported that the driver of the salon car suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. Both the lorry and the salon car were impounded by local authorities, and the body was taken to the mortuary as investigations continue.
Fatal accidents have been increasing in recent months, with nearly 4,000 deaths reported this year alone. Many others have been injured in similar accidents, and police are running a campaign to combat the growing road safety crisis.
