Tusker FC’s goalkeeping coach, Duncan Ochieng, is currently in Finland attending a goalkeeping coaching workshop with European trainers. Ochieng, who holds a CAF C badge and has previously played for Mathare United, Tusker, Sofapaka, and Vietnam’s Song Lam, is aiming to enhance his expertise in preparation for the upcoming FKF Premier League season.
Ochieng will miss Tusker’s pre-season friendlies in Uganda from August 6 to August 10, 2024, as he participates in the workshop in the Nordic region. Tusker recently signed Bandari goalkeeper Joseph Ochuka, joining Brian Odipo and Edwin Simiyu in the goalkeeping department led by Ochieng. The trio will vie for the first-choice position following the departure of Kenyan international Brian Bwire to Polokwane City in South Africa at the end of the 2023/2024 season.
Affectionately known as “Dunco,” Ochieng earned 43 caps for Harambee Stars and was the last keeper to record a clean sheet in AFCON 2004, when Kenya defeated Burkina Faso 3-0 in Tunisia. He won the Kenyan league with Mathare United in 2008 and twice with Tusker in 2011 and 2016, also securing the Cecafa Cup with Harambee Stars in 2013.
Having transitioned to goalkeeping coach in 2018 after a two-decade playing career, Ochieng has been instrumental in nurturing young talent through the Kombora Select Elite Soccer Training Programme. His trip to Finland is supported by Farova Developmental Initiative USA, One Goal Consultancy, and One More Timer CBO.
Ochieng follows in the footsteps of Bandari and Harambee Stars coach Jerry Onyango, who attended a CAF Elite Instructors Course in South Africa in December 2023, and Police FC coach Iddi Salim, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence and is considered one of Kenya’s most knowledgeable goalkeeping coaches.
