Former President Donald Trump was swiftly moved to safety on Sunday following what the FBI has described as an apparent assassination attempt at his golf course in West Palm Beach.
This incident occurs nearly two months after a shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which left Trump injured and a supporter dead.
Details are still emerging about the latest event and the suspect, identified by US media as Ryan Routh. Here’s what we know so far:
How Was the Suspect Detected?
The incident took place at Trump International Golf Club, located about 15 minutes from Trump’s Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago. Secret Service agents, who conduct security sweeps ahead of the former president, first spotted the gunman. The rifle’s muzzle—initially described as an AK-47-style by County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw—was visible through the shrubbery lining the golf course. At the time, Trump was approximately 300-500 yards away.
An agent engaged the suspect immediately, causing him to flee, according to Sheriff Bradshaw.
How Was the Suspect Apprehended?
The Secret Service agents fired four to five rounds at the gunman, who then dropped his rifle and fled in a vehicle, leaving behind the weapon, two backpacks, a scope, and a GoPro camera. Witnesses photographed the suspect’s black Nissan, aiding law enforcement in tracking him down. Routh was apprehended while driving northbound on the I-95 highway in Martin County, about 38 miles from the golf course.
Who Is Ryan Routh?
Emerging details about Routh reveal a complex background. His son, Oran, described him as a “loving and caring father” and expressed surprise at the accusations, hoping they are exaggerated. Routh’s social media profiles show him supporting various causes, including pro-Palestinian and anti-China sentiments, and calling for foreign fighters to join the conflict in Ukraine. He has also previously traveled to Ukraine to recruit soldiers.
Reports indicate that Routh has a criminal record with multiple felony convictions in North Carolina, including for carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.
What Happened to Trump?
Trump was unharmed during the incident. He reassured his supporters through a statement, saying, “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but I AM SAFE AND WELL.” Trump later recounted the event to Fox News anchor Sean Hannity, describing how the Secret Service shielded him and quickly transported him to safety.
What’s Next?
The FBI, along with the Secret Service and local law enforcement, is leading the investigation into the incident. The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris were briefed and relieved that Trump was safe. Congressional leaders expressed concern over the rise in political violence and have requested briefings on the security response.
Routh is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday at the Palm Beach County courthouse.
