President Trump has signed an executive order granting TikTok a 75-day extension to comply with a law requiring its sale or ban. During this period, the US will not enforce the law passed by Congress and signed by former President Biden.
Trump, who previously sought to ban TikTok in 2020, now suggests a possible 50-50 joint venture between the US and its Chinese owner, ByteDance, though details remain unclear. The order contradicts many in his own party, who continue to push for a ban on national security grounds.
TikTok briefly ceased operations in the US after a Supreme Court ruling upheld the law, but resumed services following Trump’s intervention. Tech leaders, including TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, attended Trump’s inauguration, and figures like Elon Musk and investor Kevin O’Leary have expressed interest in acquiring the platform.
