Former U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shares responsibility with Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Joe Biden for the high death toll in the ongoing Ukraine war. Speaking during a White House meeting with El Salvador’s president, Trump said, “Millions of people dead because of three people—Putin, Biden, and Zelensky,” blaming the conflict on poor leadership and miscalculations.
Trump criticized Zelensky’s decisions and questioned the logic of engaging in war with a more powerful nation, stating, “You don’t start a war against someone 20 times your size and then hope that people give you some missiles.” His remarks followed outrage over a deadly Russian missile strike in Sumy that killed at least 35 civilians and injured more than 100 others.
Tensions between Trump and Zelensky have remained high, especially after their tense exchange in February. Ahead of the latest attacks, Zelensky had challenged Trump to visit Ukraine and witness the devastation before making any deals with Putin. Trump concluded by saying he wants to “stop the killing” and hinted at upcoming proposals, though he gave no details.
