Two separate incidents in Nairobi claimed the lives of two minors, prompting investigations by authorities.
In Kibarage slums, Gigiri, an 11-month-old child perished in a fire that broke out early Thursday, January 2, while the family was asleep. Over ten structures were destroyed in the blaze, which took considerable time to control. The Nairobi City County Fire Brigade eventually contained the fire, during which the child’s remains were found. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing. The tragedy left many homeless, with victims seeking assistance to rebuild.
In a separate incident in Soweto slums, Kayole, a one-and-a-half-year-old child choked and died while being fed porridge by a caregiver on Wednesday afternoon. The caregiver reported the child developed breathing complications and was rushed to a chemist and later referred to Mama Lucy Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The caregiver has been detained for questioning as police investigate the circumstances. Authorities are urging families to hire trained caregivers to enhance child safety, although the cost of training poses a challenge for many families.
