A Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas was linked to Matthew Alan Livelsberger, a 37-year-old active-duty US Special Forces soldier. Livelsberger, from Colorado Springs, Colorado, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound moments before the blast, officials confirmed.
The vehicle, rented in Denver and driven over 800 miles, exploded on New Year’s Day while parked near the hotel entrance. Authorities reported seven minor injuries. The Cybertruck’s design mitigated the explosion’s impact, sending the force upward rather than outward, sparing nearby windows and glass doors.
Police discovered fuel canisters, fireworks, firearms, a military ID, and personal items in the wreckage. Investigators have yet to determine a motive. Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated, “It’s a suicide with a bombing immediately after.”
Livelsberger, a decorated Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant, was serving in Germany but on approved leave to visit his wife and infant daughter in Colorado. His family reported no prior signs of distress.
Authorities noted similarities between this incident and a previous New Orleans truck attack on New Year’s Day but found no direct connection. Both suspects were military veterans with service in Afghanistan and had used the same rental service for their vehicles.
Officials confirmed no further threats in Las Vegas related to the incident.
