Naomi Nyiro, the head teacher of Mashamba Comprehensive School in Malindi, narrowly survived a road accident that cost her a leg in November 2017, only to face an unimaginable tragedy years later.
On Friday afternoon, Nyiro was traveling on a boda boda along the Malindi-Mombasa highway when a light aircraft crash-landed, killing her instantly. The aircraft’s propeller struck her, severing her head and also claiming the lives of the boda boda rider and a bystander, who was burned beyond recognition.
The tragic incident occurred in the Kwa Chocha area near Malindi town when a training Cessna aircraft experienced engine failure and crash-landed on the highway. While all three people aboard the aircraft—the pilot, an instructor, and a student—survived, the accident left devastation on the ground.
Nyiro’s husband, Daniel Mwagona, a retired head teacher, was shocked to learn of her death. Upon hearing of the accident, he called her phone, only for a stranger to answer and confirm the tragic news.
The sudden loss has left Nyiro’s family, school staff, and students struggling to process her death. Mwagona, along with their son, Stephen Malingi, tearfully recounted their grief, while family spokesman Bernard Taura called for a thorough investigation and appropriate compensation from the flying school and its insurers.
“We understand no compensation can truly replace a life, but we demand just compensation for this devastating loss,” Mwagona said.
A watchman at Mashamba Comprehensive School described Nyiro as a compassionate and dedicated leader. Recalling their last interaction, he shared how she had promised to assist him later that day but left urgently before the tragic accident occurred.
The loss of Nyiro has left a void in the school and the community, which remembers her as a selfless and humane educator who served without blemish.
