Police in Mwala, Machakos County, are investigating a suspected arson incident that destroyed a dormitory at Makutano Boys High School early Tuesday morning. The fire broke out around 8 AM while students were in class, resulting in the loss of personal belongings such as clothing, bedding, and books, though no injuries were reported.
Emergency responders, including local police and a fire brigade from the Machakos County Government, extinguished the flames. Several students were detained for questioning regarding the incident, with around seven under investigation as of Tuesday evening.
A Directorate of Criminal Investigation detective indicated that no arrests have been made yet, as officers seek to identify the culprits. Forensic samples have been collected for analysis, and CCTV footage revealed a power outage at 7:30 AM, just before the fire started.
Officials expressed concern over the increasing frequency of school fires in Machakos County, indicating that this incident was likely arson. Mwala Deputy County Commissioner David Tegutwa held a meeting with student leaders from 71 secondary schools to address security challenges, emphasizing the need for students to be part of the solution. He encouraged students to focus on their education and safeguard school property for future generations.
