Moses Ndolo, a security guard, faced a financial burden after his wife was admitted to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital. He was unaware of a new rule requiring patients to notify the Social Health Authority (SHA) within 24 hours of admission, which led to a hefty bill for medical services. Despite being registered and consistently paying for SHA, Ndolo was told he would have to pay out-of-pocket. Another case involved Khamis Thoya, whose brother, Richard, died after being treated without complete SHA registration, leaving Thoya with a bill of over Sh500,000. These cases highlight the frustrations with SHA’s rule changes and the lack of communication, with citizens calling for better awareness and transparency. Senator Miraj Abdillahi criticized the system, urging the government to address the issues with SHA and its service delivery.
