Following the Senate’s impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, his security detail has been reduced. This move came after Senate Speaker Amason Kingi officially gazetted Gachagua’s removal from office. Prior to the impeachment, security was heightened at Karen Hospital, where Gachagua was admitted, but was scaled down after the gazette notice was issued.
Gachagua had vacated his official residence days before the Senate vote. He previously had more than 50 security officers from the General Service Unit’s Recce Unit and other police services.
Senators upheld five of the 11 charges against Gachagua, citing constitutional violations, misconduct, and undermining national security institutions. Speaker Kingi’s notice confirmed his removal under constitutional articles concerning office integrity and independence.
Gachagua’s lawyers plan to challenge the impeachment in court, potentially sparking a political crisis. He remains hospitalized after experiencing severe chest pains, which his doctors attribute to stress. He is currently stable and undergoing further tests.
