Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has endorsed President William Ruto’s initiative to foster unity by including opposition members in the new Cabinet.
In an interview with the Star, Sakaja, who previously committed to reconciling ODM leader Raila Odinga with President Ruto, highlighted the importance of national cohesion for advancing development.
“In politics, there are no permanent enemies—only what matters in the moment. If coming together facilitates progress, why not?” Sakaja remarked.
Sakaja was an early advocate for collaboration between Odinga and Ruto, working closely with opposition members to drive Nairobi’s development agenda. A recently surfaced video shows Sakaja pledging to facilitate cooperation between Raila and Ruto, despite any opposition.
Sakaja defended his collaboration with both leaders, stating, “I have no regrets about working with Raila Odinga and William Ruto. If Raila and Ruto come together, I will be the one to make it happen.”
He emphasized that Nairobi belongs to all its residents, irrespective of party or tribe, and urged for mutual respect between the President and Raila Odinga. “Those who oppose my cooperation with Azimio should seek division elsewhere,” he added.
Though affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Sakaja has effectively partnered with many Azimio-affiliated Members of County Assembly (MCAs), citing the necessity of this cooperation for Nairobi’s governance.
Sakaja’s commitment to bridging political divides and fostering collaboration gained further validation following the inclusion of Raila’s allies in President Ruto’s Cabinet.
