President William Ruto has dismissed critics claiming he is unlikely to secure a second term, emphasizing his determination and divine guidance in his political journey. Speaking at a church service in Dagoretti North, Nairobi, the President noted that many doubted his ability to win the presidency, yet he triumphed.
“Some people are talking about one term or two or three terms. Remember, many didn’t believe I’d even have one term as President. But who is God?” Ruto remarked.
He attributed his leadership style, which seeks to unite all leaders and citizens, as a reason for the speculation. “God has given me the opportunity to transform Kenya. That is why I am committed to working with everyone,” he added.
During the service, several ODM legislators broke ranks with their party and endorsed Ruto’s reelection bid for 2027. The MPs included George Aladwa (Makadara), TJ Kajwang’ (Ruaraka), Antony Oluoch (Mathare), Beatrice Elachi (Dagoretti North), Felix Odiwuor (Lang’ata), and Sam Atandi (Alego Usonga).
The lawmakers praised Ruto’s development record and efforts to foster national unity, despite their party’s stern warning against supporting rivals. The ODM Central Committee had recently cautioned members to avoid actions undermining party cohesion.
Acting ODM Secretary General Anyang’ Nyong’o reiterated the party’s commitment to fielding a presidential candidate in 2027, urging members to stay loyal. “Let us avoid supporting competitors in ways that may harm the party’s unity and goals,” he stated.
However, Aladwa and his colleagues defended their stance, highlighting Ruto’s goodwill in appointing five ODM leaders to his Cabinet, including John Mbadi (Treasury), Hassan Joho (Mining), Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives), Beatrice Askul (EAC), and Opiyo Wandayi (Energy).
Aladwa, the Nairobi ODM County Chairman, dismissed claims that Ruto would be a one-term president. “Those calling him a one-term President are in for a rude shock,” he said, adding, “Unlike others who visit State House in secret, we are openly supporting the President.”
Atandi also urged Ruto to ignore detractors, expressing confidence in his reelection. “So long as you have God and Baba, you will not serve one term,” he assured.
The ODM legislators’ defection has exposed divisions within the party, raising questions about its cohesion as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
