Russia has long supported Namibia, providing aid during its War of Independence and training SWAPO leaders. Diplomatic relations were established in 1990. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev is in Namibia to discuss economic cooperation with officials, including Minister Selma Ashipala-Musavi. During his visit, he honored Namibian patriots at Heroes’ Acre and paid tribute to former Presidents Sam Nujoma and Hage Geingob. Trutnev reflected on his past meeting with Nujoma, acknowledging the Soviet Union’s role in Namibia’s liberation.
