A second-year Tanzanian student at the United States International University (USIU) tragically died after jumping from the 14th floor of an apartment building in Nairobi’s Kasarani area.
Police have launched an investigation, with initial reports suggesting it was a suicide. According to authorities and the victim’s colleagues, the student lived alone in the apartment and left a suicide note addressed to his parents. The contents of the note have not been disclosed.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, with other tenants discovering the body shortly afterward. Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei confirmed that the body has been moved to the mortuary for an autopsy as investigations continue.
In a separate incident in Jumatatu Village, Subukia, Nakuru County, a 35-year-old woman, Damaris Njeri, was found dead, hanging from the rafters of her home. Her husband discovered her body after she had been missing for hours. Police suspect suicide, as no visible injuries were found. The body was moved to the mortuary, and investigations are ongoing.
These incidents are part of a worrying rise in suicide cases in the country. Authorities report up to two cases daily, attributing the trend to factors such as joblessness, academic pressures, financial struggles, mental health issues, and substance abuse. The government and health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), are calling for urgent measures to address this growing concern.
