Police authorities in Kenya are increasingly alarmed by the rise in mob lynching incidents across the country, with some victims being found innocent. The police headquarters has been documenting these occurrences and has initiated investigations to hold perpetrators accountable, including vigilantes involved in similar acts.
Recent Incidents:
- In Murang’a, a mob attacked Gachocho police station, demanding the handover of a murder suspect, resulting in chaos and the suspect’s lynching.
- Two suspects were lynched in Embakasi for allegedly stealing a mobile phone, while another was killed in Spring Valley during a failed robbery.
- A case of mistaken identity occurred in Butere, Kakamega, where three individuals were lynched after being wrongfully suspected of child trafficking.
Authorities emphasize the criminal nature of mob lynching and urge the public to report suspects to law enforcement rather than take justice into their own hands. Police are particularly concerned about the trend involving boda boda riders, who often become targets during accidents.
Police spokesperson Resla Onyango highlighted ongoing civic education initiatives aimed at curbing mob violence. She reiterated that mob lynching is illegal and urged communities to cooperate with the authorities to ensure justice.
