Refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya have been given 30 days to hand over their passports from their countries of origin to the Department of Refugee Services, as announced by Refugee Commissioner John Burugu. Those who fail to comply risk legal penalties, including losing their refugee status and expulsion. Despite having Conventional Travel Documents (CTDs) issued by the department, some refugees continue to use their original passports. Burugu emphasized the importance of following this directive to protect their rights. This move follows the government’s integration plan for over 700,000 refugees from Dadaab and Kakuma camps, a project set to cost Sh115.6 billion.
