Publishers are calling on the government to remove the 16% VAT on textbooks to encourage reading and make books more affordable for Kenyans. Kenya Publishers Association chairman Kiarie Kamau argued that the tax has made books too expensive for many, and eliminating it would support affordable access to knowledge and promote lifelong learning. He also raised concerns about digital piracy, which hurts the industry by undercutting book prices online.
Kiarie spoke ahead of the 25th Nairobi International Book Fair, which will be held at Sarit Centre from Wednesday to Sunday. KPA vice chairperson Agatha Karani invited Kenyans to explore innovations in book publishing at the fair, with exhibitors from countries like China, Japan, the UK, and Egypt. The fair will also feature the Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature.
