Princess Jully gained fame with her hit song “Dunia Mbaya,” which was inspired by the tragic deaths of her friends due to their lifestyle. The song later became a key part of a national campaign against HIV/AIDS.
Initially, she was a background singer in her late husband Julius Okumu’s band, Jolly Boys. After his death in 1997, she took over the band and led it to national prominence, drawing inspiration from Congolese artist Mbilia Bel.
