President William Ruto took a rare break from the busy schedule of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday, enjoying a stroll through the streets of New York City.
Having arrived last Saturday for the annual meeting that gathers 193 UN member states, Ruto appeared relaxed in a black suit and brown tie, walking while using his tablet. He was accompanied by State House Deputy Chief of Staff Josphat Nanok and both local and international aides.
This outing likely provided him with a chance to soak in the city’s iconic atmosphere amidst the high-stakes diplomatic discussions at the Assembly. Throughout the day, Ruto chaired several panel discussions and engaged in bilateral talks with various heads of state, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
During their meeting, Ruto highlighted their discussions on the Railway City project, the extension of their strategic partnership agreement, and enhancing trade between their nations. “Kenya and the United Kingdom share a long-standing history of collaboration and friendship. We are dedicated to strengthening our cooperation in climate financing, advancing renewable energy initiatives, and advocating for reforms in the international financial system,” he stated.
The UNGA serves as the main policy-making body of the UN, providing a unique platform for multilateral discussions on a wide range of international issues, with each member state holding an equal vote.
This year’s session, which concludes on Monday, marks a significant milestone in the global effort to accelerate progress toward the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Today, Ruto is set to deliver an address at a high-level forum. Among the leaders accompanying him on this trip are Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, opposition leader Raila Odinga, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, and Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, among others.
