The October 2024 polio vaccination campaign saw two child fatalities, confirmed by the Ministry of Health. Health Director Patrick Amoth reported 23 post-vaccination cases, with 16 being mild reactions like rashes, fever, and diarrhoea. Seven cases were classified as serious, involving symptoms such as limb weakness and convulsions. Among these, two cases led to deaths.
The Kenya National Vaccines Safety Advisory Committee reviewed the cases, finding that 18 were likely unrelated to the vaccine, with four linked to vaccine reactions and one indeterminate due to limited data. Over 3.6 million children were vaccinated across nine high-risk counties, underscoring vaccine safety despite the incidents.
