Detectives are investigating the deaths of a mother and her adult son, who were found in the same room after a suspected suicide incident in Athi River, Machakos County.
The victims, identified as Catherine Mueni and her son Bosco Mulwa, had left their family home on January 29 and gone to Mulwa’s house, where their bodies were later discovered. According to a relative, Mueni had instructed her younger child to prepare for school before she left, but she never returned the next day. A search led to Mulwa’s house in the Samora area, where police found his body hanging from an electric cable while Mueni’s body was on the bed with no visible injuries, suggesting possible poisoning. The bodies were moved to the mortuary for autopsy as investigations continue.
In a separate case in Mwimuto, Kingeero, Kabete, 28-year-old Omukuba Asulu was found dead in an apparent suicide. Police discovered an insecticide container near his body, indicating he may have ingested poison. His body was also taken to the mortuary for further examination.
Another incident was reported in Makindu, Makueni, where 28-year-old Mulu Nduku was found hanging in his grandmother’s house. Authorities have launched investigations into these cases amid growing concerns over the rising number of suicides.
Reports indicate that up to two suicide cases are recorded daily, prompting calls for urgent intervention. According to the World Health Organization, common triggers include financial hardships, mental health disorders, job loss, academic pressure, and personal struggles such as bullying, substance abuse, and depression. The government has been implementing measures to address the worrying trend.
