Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse expressed pride after the National Assembly and Senate approved the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Mutuse stated that the decision marks a new chapter for Kenya, emphasizing the need for leaders to uphold the constitution and laws.
Mutuse highlighted his role as the first to initiate a successful impeachment of a sitting Deputy President, calling it an act of courage for the benefit of Kenyans. He believes the future of Kenya now appears brighter.
The Senate upheld Gachagua’s impeachment by approving five of the 11 charges against him, including shareholding misconduct, undermining judicial independence, violating the National Cohesion Act, and public attacks on the NIS. Last week, the National Assembly voted 281-44 in favor of the impeachment, with one abstention.
Gachagua’s legal team exited in protest after senators rejected a motion to extend the process. Gachagua was absent due to illness, as reported by his lawyer.
