The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) arrested 61-year-old Grace Njoki Mulei for allegedly causing a disturbance at the Ministry of Health Boardroom during a protest against healthcare inequalities. She was tracked down in Nairobi and is being held at Upper Hill Police Station pending her court appearance.
Her arrest has sparked backlash from civil society groups, including the Kenya Medical Association and the Law Society of Kenya, who demand her release. They argue that advocating for better healthcare is a civic duty, not a crime, and warn that such actions intimidate other patients seeking justice.
The Police Reforms Working Group, alongside other human rights organizations, condemned the arrest as a violation of fundamental rights and called for an end to harassment of healthcare advocates.
