Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has declared his intention to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential race, even if he has to run alone. Speaking at his Upper Hill office in Nairobi, Omtatah emphasized his commitment to bring about a free country in 2027, stating that his presidential bid is non-negotiable, regardless of support from other political figures. He acknowledged that while former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has struck a deal with President Ruto, his focus remains on leading the nation.
Omtatah revealed his presidential exploratory committee, which includes leadership and governance expert Mary Riungu as chair, and several other key figures. The committee’s goal is to ensure Omtatah’s candidacy is viable and to remove any obstacles ahead of the 2027 election.
The senator expressed his belief that campaigns should not be driven by money but by the people. He rejected claims that a successful campaign would require billions, asserting that once a strong connection with the public is established, no amount of money could stand in the way. He also set out his vision for a prosperous Kenya, focusing on economic and social reforms that aim to increase the per capita income and achieve food sovereignty, universal healthcare, and accessible public services. Omtatah also pledged to fully implement the constitution, tackle corruption, and address poverty and unemployment through economic modernization.
