A Chief Inspector of Police serving as an Officer Commanding Station (OCS) in Trans Nzoia County surrendered to police on Thursday following a shooting incident in Sotik, Bomet County. The officer, off duty and at his rural home about 400 kilometers from his station, allegedly shot Charles Mutai in the abdomen during a dispute at his bar on November 26.
Mutai was initially treated at Kapkatet Hospital and later transferred to Litein Mission Hospital, where he is in stable condition. Police recovered a spent 9mm cartridge at the scene, and the officer turned in his service pistol for ballistic testing.
Authorities are investigating the incident as attempted murder, with charges likely to include firearm misuse. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and investigators plan to question both the officer and the victim. The case has reignited concerns about law enforcement conduct and firearm use while off duty.
