Governors in the North Rift region are eagerly anticipating the elevation of Eldoret to city status on August 8, with President William Ruto scheduled to confer the city charter to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii.
The regional governors convened in Eldoret to coordinate preparations for the event, expressing their commitment to collaborate in transforming the town into a thriving city. Among those present were Stephen Sang of Nandi, also the Chairman of the North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB), Wisley Rotich of Elgeyo Marakwet, and Jeremiah Lomurukai of Turkana. Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago and MPs from the region also participated.
“We are excited and fully prepared to host the President and all guests as we celebrate the birth of Eldoret City,” Governor Bii remarked.
He emphasized that the county has initiated comprehensive preparations, involving residents, the business community, and local leaders. Bii announced a ten-day waiver of charges to facilitate town beautification ahead of the auspicious occasion, urging building owners to repaint their premises.
Governor Sang highlighted Eldoret’s significance as a regional hub and predicted substantial infrastructure development and economic growth following its elevation to city status.
“The transformation of Eldoret into a city will benefit the entire region, including neighboring towns like Kapsabet, Kitale, and Iten,” Sang emphasized, noting the potential influx of investors and job creation opportunities.
He also cited the planned expansion of Eldoret International Airport as a significant enhancement for the city’s growth.
Upon achieving city status, Eldoret will become Kenya’s fifth city, joining Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nakuru.
Senator Mandago praised Eldoret’s abundant heritage and expressed confidence in its readiness for city status, noting the town’s existing infrastructure and amenities.
